Greenlight@Brussels Day 2011

Greenlight for Girls is an International NGO and a social initiative with the mission to encourage young girls of all ages to consider a future in math, science, engineering and technology by introducing them to the world of science in fun and exciting ways. The Board of Directors is a small group of professionals from science-related fields, gender equality researchers and international teachers located in Europe, USA, India and Africa. Our volunteers are individuals and organisations who wish to contribute their knowledge and time to this endeavor — they are men and women from a diversity of backgrounds, nationalities and professions with the common wish to make a difference in a child’s future.

Greenlight@Brussels 2011 Announcement

80 volunteers, 260 girls, more than 15 workshops and funlabs – that was the Greenlight@Brussels day 2011. ICT2act participated in the event 2011 in Brussels by organising a Robotics workshop, using the Arexx RP6 robot system and the Sagan robot mission simulation software. Here are some impressions of this great day and our workshop:

Making off… Let’s start the tinker work…

The Greenlight Expert Teams are at work – time for the assistants to have a little chat!

Despite of the high expectations, the Greenlight Expert Team had some fun (from time to time ;)

On the other side of Europe, 54 girl experts were watching closely the operations in Brussels.
Tullia Urschitz and her team from the School of Robotics in Genova:

Cheryl, the Chief of the Greenlight@Brussels day, enjoys listening to 50 girls, all saying different things at the same time :)

But Cheryl wasn’t the only one that had fun communicating around the world…

Our workshop was officially part of the EU Robotics Week and NASA planned the launch of the next generation Mars Rover “Curiosity” right during the Greenlight event. A very supporting and encouraging gesture ;-) The Greenlight Experts team thank thier colleagues from NASA. Of course, we used one of the fantastic NASA videos to explain how the rovers get to Mars.

Our colleague Iona with a parallel Robotics workshop introducing programming algorithms…

At the end of the Event, Cheryl announces the Greenlight Ambassadors 2011/2012!

On the Italian side, the mission was successful as well!

Live with Brussels….

Real experts at work, first measuring…

… then planing…

… and finally programming! Here, Lego NXT robots are used.

Some video impressions:

Tullia Urschitz from the Scuola di Robotica made a great video as well!
Interactive Session Fumane (VR) – Bruxelles, in cooperation with Green Light for Girls and the European Center for Women and Technology (ECWT). The European Space Agency ESA requested technical support from the”Greenlight For Girls” specialists for programming their 5 Mars Explorer robots!
